Court lenient on Maselspoort Resort racist who attacked black boys

Jakobus Klaasen has been sentenced to two years imprisonment or a fine of R20 000 for his racial attack on two young black boys at Maselspoort Resort.

Klaasen, who was part of a group of three white men on the day of the attack, was given a light sentence for assaulting three Nakedi brothers at the resort’s swimming pool.

The attack happened in Bloemfontein on Christmas Day in 2022.

The incident drew widespread criticism when a video of Klaasen, 37, Stephanus van der Westhuizen, 47, and forty-seven-year old Johan Nel went viral on social media.

Klaasen was further handed a five-year prison sentence wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of assault, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, or attempted murder during the period of the suspension.

Bloemfontein magistrate Rasheed Matthews also sentenced him to a further 36 months correctional supervision.

In the video, filmed by CUT FM radio presenter Tumi Frost, the racist trio can be seen pushing, choking, drowning and punching the Nakedi brothers.

The trio had tried to prevent the teenage boys from gaining entry to the pool area, noting that it was reserved for white people.

Brian Nakedi, the father of the teenagers, said at the time that it was not the first time his family had suffered a racial attack.

Nakedi, who is also a professor at Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein, said the incident left his children traumatised.

The attack prompted EFF members in the province to stage a protest at the resort.

Responding to the sentence, EFF Free State chairperson Coach Mapheule Liphoko said: “The judicial system is operating in a capitalistic society.

“When you are poor and black, you will never get justice, as it happened in the case of the Nakedi family. This proves the judicial system is captured by white monopoly capital.”

In May, Van der Westhuizen pleaded guilty to a charge of common assault and was sentenced to a fine of R4 000 or 12 months imprisonment.

He apologised to the boys and their father, who have since accepted his apology. The case against Nel, the remaining accused, goes on trial on December 6.

The Nakedi family had not responded to Sunday World questions at the time of publishing.
