SA records zero Covid-19 deaths in last 48 hours

No Covid-19-related deaths were recorded in the last 48-hour reporting period, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, which said 1 147 new cases had been identified across the country.

The increase represented a 6.1% positivity rate, which brought laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 684 319. Due to an audit exercise by the Department of Health, there may however be a backlog in reported Covid-19 deaths.


Total fatalities remain unchanged at 99 543.

At least 23 245 373 tests have been conducted in both public and private facilities around the country. In private medical facilities, 12-million people have tested for the virus, while public healthcare institutions have tested more than 10-million people.

New tests in the private facilities are sitting at 11 855 and public healthcare had 6 854 new tests recorded on Sunday. The majority of these were from Gauteng (36%) and KwaZulu-Natal (23%).

Western Cape accounted for 21%; North West recorded for 6%; Free State and Mpumalanga each accounted for 4%, respectively; Eastern Cape 3%; Limpopo 2%, and Northern Cape accounted for 1% of new cases.
