Deputy president Paul Mashatile’s VIP protection team, accused of assaulting a motorist, remain on bail while the state finalises its investigation.
The eight men – Shadrack Kojana, Johannes Mampuru, Pomso Mofokeng, Madumetja Ramokhonami, Molefo Boshielo, Mpakameseni Mkhize, Lesibana Rambau, and Fhatuwani Tshidada – appeared in the Randburg magistrates’ court on Wednesday.
They also face other charges including malicious damage to property, pointing of a firearm, reckless driving, and attempting to defeat the administration of justice.
The state informed the court that there were still outstanding documents on the case. State prosecutor Advocate Elize Le Roux said two cellphone recordings, a few statements and an identity parade are what’s left to complete the investigation.
In July, the suspects, who are police officers attached to Mashatile’s security detail; were recorded while allegedly assaulting military officers on the N1 highway in Johannesburg. After they handed themselves in at the Sandton Police Station, the eight accused were released on a bail of R10 000 each.
It was also revealed in court that the previous defence counsel had confirmed that they have withdrawn from the case and all eight accused will be represented by one legal representative.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Phindi Mjonondwana said the state has reconsidered its position on the issue of identity and an identity case will be conducted on October 18.
“Ours is to present all relevant evidence before the court and the court will make a determination in terms of the strength of the case.”
Hleziphi Mkhasibe, the presiding magistrate in the case, postponed the matter to November 9 for further investigation.
