Following a month-long period of uncertainty, DNA analysis has confirmed that the human remains found in Rust De Winter, Gauteng, are those of Aserie Ndlovu, a community radio journalist, and Zodwa Precious Mdhluli, his partner, who disappeared in February under mysterious circumstances.
The confirmation of the couple’s identities provides a tragic resolution to the case and gives their bereaved families closure after their disappearance caused widespread concern.
The remains were positively identified by DNA testing, according to national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, who said the results matched samples from Ndlovu and Mdhluli’s biological relatives.
Seven suspects in police custody
“The South African Police Service has notified both families and is pleased to have assisted in providing closure,” Mathe stated, emphasising the police’s commitment to resolving the case.
The most recent sighting of Mdhluli and Ndlovu, a prominent member of Mpumalanga’s community radio scene, was on February 18, 2025, at their Mpumalanga residence.
A thorough investigation into their abrupt disappearance led to the arrest of seven suspects and the discovery of their remains.
The suspects have been appearing at the KwaMhlanga Magistrates’ Court in Mpumalanga on charges of kidnapping, house robbery, and possession of stolen property.
In the course of the investigation, police found two VW Citi Golfs that were purportedly equipped with parts from Ndlovu’s car in addition to domestic goods that were allegedly taken from the couple’s home.
Commitment to local journalism
The case against the suspects has been strengthened by these discoveries, and they are currently being investigated as the legal proceedings proceed. They remain in jail.
Ndlovu was respected for his commitment to local journalism, and his passing, along with Mdhluli’s, has shocked their community.
Despite their grief, the couple’s families thanked the police for their efforts in revealing the truth.
The case serves as a reminder of South Africa’s persistent problems with violent crime, and the police are advising the public to exercise caution.
