The Richards Bay magistrate’s court postponed the corruption case against Dudu Myeni to 10 May 2024, for it to be transferred to the Johannesburg High Court.
The matter was postponed in Myeni’s absence, as it was indicated by her attorney that she was hospitalised. The attorney of Trevor Mathenjwa, who is accused number two in this matter, was also absent due to ill health.
Face corruption charges linked to Bosasa
Myeni and Mathenjwa are facing corruption and fraud charges linked to Bosasa, amounting to approximately R300,000. This amount was allegedly offered and received as gratification from Bosasa and its subsidiary Sondolo IT.
In September last year, almost three years after revelations that Myeni received bribes from corruption-tainted company Bosasa, she was finally been arrested.
Myeni, who is chairperson of the Jacob Zuma Foundation, was arrested alongside former Bosasa subsidiary, Sondolo IT, director Mathenjwa. They were arrested on charges of corruption and fraud related to a R300,000 Bosasa-linked corruption case.
Myeni and Mathenjwa were granted bail of R10,000 each by the Richards Bay magistrate’s court.
Implicated by ex-Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi
The Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture found that Myeni facilitated corruption and influenced former president Jacob Zuma to favour Bosasa. The latter being a facilities company that is accused of corruption involving government contracts.
This was revealed by former Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi. He testified before the commission that Bosasa won R2.3-billion in government tenders. The tenders were received between 2000 and 2016. Bosasa won the tenders by paying out R75-million in bribes to politicians, government officials and “corruption influencers” like Myeni. This according to Agrizzi. Myeni was by then chairperson of the South African Airways (SAA) board.
The state accuses Myeni of failing to disclose her interests in terms of the SAA Conflict of Interest Policy. She stands accused of corruption for receiving gratification from Bosasa subsidiary Sondolo IT, offered by the former director, Mathenjwa.
Security upgrades, travel and hotel expenses paid by Bosasa
Myeni allegedly received security upgrades for her Richards Bay premises during May 2014 and March 2015, to the value of approximately R200,000. She is further accused of benefiting from hotel accommodation and travel expenses from Bosasa. These were facilitated by Blake Travels, between May 2014 and March 2015, for over R107,000.
The two are currently out on R10,000 bail, and they are expected to be back in court when the matter resumes in May.
