Durban’s N2 highway is under siege from brazen thugs who terrorise unsuspecting motorists.
The latest victim is a motorist who was killed while driving on the N2 at Tugela River bridge near Mandeni last week.
The thugs are believed to have blockaded the road with rocks, prompting the driver to stop. He was then shot and killed before his valuables were stolen.
Prior to this attack, in Durban’s residential area of Yellowwood Park, a woman survived death after a rock was thrown at her moving car. She managed to run for dear life.
Another motorist was struck dead by a vehicle while attempting to flee from his attackers, who had placed objects on the highway.
The surge in the rock-throwing attacks has prompted the DA to call for an explanation on what is being done to intervene and stop the loss of lives.
“We have written to the KZN’s transport portfolio committee chairperson Mondli Chiliza demanding answers on what is happening,” said Sharon Hoosen, DA spokesperson on community safety.
“Our province’s roads are under siege. If it’s not trucks being burned, it’s horrific multiple car pile-ups or brutal attacks on road users.”
The DA conceded that the SA Police Service has initiated a task team to address the latest N2 attacks, but the opposition party is concerned that there has been only a few arrests.
“As a result, the DA has called for a full report to be presented,” said Hoosen.
Late in 2022, Gauteng traffic police urged motorists to be vigilant when driving on the N12 highway towards Lenasia after several people complained about spikes and rocks being thrown on passing vehicles.
The officials said at the time that motorists who stopped to either inspect damage or remove the objects were attacked, robbed and sometimes killed.
