Eastern Cape education department turns its back on interns

The Eastern Cape department of education says it is not obliged to hire anyone on permanent contract as it plans to bring in more interns.

This was in response to the African Transformation Movement’s (ATM’s) call for the department to absorb its interns that have served at least five years under renewed internship contracts for the education department.

Malibongwe Mtima, Eastern Cape department of education spokesperson, clarified the issue. He said the office-based internship programme did not have any renewed internship contracts. Mtima claimed that the contracts were all terminated once expired.

Interns not hired on permanent contracts

“The department does not hire interns on a permanent basis. It places them in a contracting 24 months as detected by provincial policy.

“The department will only recruit 520 interns this financial year. Recruitment is aligned to the availability of the budget,” said Mtima.

According to a source close to the matter, the department allegedly prioritises people who are related to the union. Or those who are related to the department’s management for internships and employment.

However, the department denied this. It claimed that their recruitment policy requires panel members to declare relationships with interviewees.

Allegations of favouritism denied

“There is no law in the country that says if you have a relative in any organisation, this puts you in the disadvantage of being recruited. As long as due process and competitive recruitment is followed,” said Mtima.

ATM president Vuyolwethu Zungula said it was disheartening that the department has now dumped interns. He said the interns had served beyond customary duration of their internships.

Zungula added that the extended internship created expectations. It had motivated them that they would be permanently employed at the education department. This because they have gained experience and skills in their elongated journey.

“The current unemployment crisis in our country further exacerbates their plight. …It is imperative that we explore all avenues within our powers. This in order to assist these committed individuals in securing stable employment opportunities. …Especially With high unemployment, especially among the youth,” said Zungula.

Call for department to hire them and help fight youth unemployment

In a letter to the department, Zungula pleaded that the department identifies and facilitates suitable vacancies. These within the department or local schools, for the now unemployed citizens who had served under the department.

He said the department should also consider opening new positions or help in exploring other avenues.

“This prolonged duration of service reflects their dedication and loyalty to the department. Considering their extensive experience and consistent performance,” said Zungula.

“I strongly urge for their due consideration for permanent positions within the department. It is essential that we reward their enduring commitment with the stability and security of permanent employment.”
