The Eastern Cape government has confirmed that the death toll from devastating floods that began earlier this month has reached 100.
This comes as the South African Weather Service has issued a warning for potential further heavy rainfall.
These floods have caused widespread loss of life, disrupted livelihoods, displaced residents and damaged infrastructure.
94 deceased identified
Of the deceased, 94 have been identified and returned to families. Six bodies still undergoing identification process. OR Tambo District accounts for 76 deaths, followed by Amathole had 10. Alfred Nzo district had five (5) deaths, Chris Hani (5), Joe Gqabi (2), and Sarah Baartman (2).
Among the victims, 63 are adults and 37 are children, including 22 learners.
Acting Premier Mlungisi Mvoko, who is the Finance MEC in the province, has expressed profound grief.
“This tragedy has shattered our communities,” said Mvoko.
“We are committed to supporting recovery and rebuilding lives.”
The government is providing psychosocial support and humanitarian aid. It is partnering with NGOs and the private sector.
A two-day aid programme in Mnquma Local Municipality is set for June 26 to 27, 2025. This project by Old Mutual and Amathole District will distribute essentials like blankets.
Search and recovery teams were commended for their tireless efforts. And searches continue for missing individuals, with the toll likely to rise.

OR Tambo District has restored water to 95% of affected areas. However, Mthatha West, Coffee Bay, Mdlankala, and Mhlanga still rely on water tankers.
“We’re working relentlessly to repair infrastructure.”
Meanwhile, three adult females have died, while two others sustained severe injuries in a car accident. The crash involved a bakkie on a rural road near Canzibe Hospital in Ngqeleni, OR Tambo District, on Tuesday.
It is believed that the vehicle was used as a staff transport by teachers from a nearby school.

The teachers, all females, have died, while two others, including the driver, also female, were critically injured.
It is alleged that the bakkie lost a tyre, and the driver lost control. The vehicle veered off the road, killing the three people on impact.
The two injured people were transported to a hospital in Mthatha. A case of culpable homicide has been opened for further investigation.
