A 43-year-old Eastern Cape woman is set to appear in the New Brighton magistrate’s court on Monday for opening a false rape case against two police officers.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu said a case of perjury and defeating the ends of justice has been opened against the woman.
She said the woman falsely accused police of raping her following a complaint attended by police members at a house in Kwazakele.
Argument with boyfriend
Naidu said it is alleged that on the evening of Friday, November 10, 2023 at about 10pm, the woman’s boyfriend called police after an argument between the two while they were drinking with friends.
“The rowdy and intoxicated woman was taken away by police and dropped off at her home.
“The woman then walked back to her boyfriend’s house, alleging that the two attending police officials raped her.
“She was taken to the crisis centre at the hospital and a case of rape was opened.
“During the investigation, it emerged that the woman had fabricated her allegation to teach her boyfriend a lesson, hence cases were opened against her,” said Naidu.
Arrest for perjury, defeating the ends of justice
She added that the woman was arrested on Sunday.
Naidu said Nelson Mandela Bay district police commissioner, Maj-Gen Vuyisile Ncata strongly condemns false accusations.
He also emphasised the serious consequences they pose.
“This warning is issued, urging citizens to exercise responsibility when reporting crimes.
“Maj Gen Ncata has cautioned that such allegations not only divert resources but also damage the credibility and reputation of law enforcement,” said Naidu.
Strong warning
Ncata said the opening of false cases is a criminal offence, and those found guilty will face legal consequences.
“We will thoroughly investigate such cases, ensuring that justice is served and deterring others from making baseless accusations.
“False reports impact on crime statistics and creates an inaccurate account of crime,” said Ncata.
