Police have arrested five suspects who are linked to an attack of a police officer in Eden Park, Alberton on Thursday.
The arrest follows a video that went viral on social media. In the video, the cop can be seen cornered by a group of people who were attempting to rob him of his firearm.
According to police, the suspects face charges of obstructing an officer from executing their duties, assault, and attempted robbery.
The group is expected to make their first appearance in the Palm Ridge magistrate’s court on Monday.
Brigadier Brenda Muridili said police officers from Eden Park police station were on routine patrol when they noticed a vehicle that looked suspicious.
“It is alleged that as the police stopped the car, community members who were at a nearby park started to attack the police,” said Muridili.
“The officers had to fire warning shots to protect themselves from community members who were attacking them.”
Second attack in one week
Muridili added that the incident is the second attack in a week involving an assault on policemen in Eden Park.
“The station commander is still nursing his injuries after he was attacked and injured by community members on Sunday.
“He [the station commander] was responding to an assault case in the area. A suspect has since been arrested and denied bail.”
Meanwhile, Gauteng police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, has condemned the attack on police officers in Eden Park.
Mawela said the violent behaviour of some community members in Eden Park and a lack of respect towards cops would not be tolerated.
“All those who were involved in the attack on police have been arrested and will be brought to justice,” Mawela said.
“A case of assault and attack on police has been opened at Eden Park police station for investigation.”
