The EFF has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic deaths of 10 party members in a devastating accident on the R34 near Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal.
Twelve more passengers suffered serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals.
The incident happened as the members were making their way back from the EFF June 16 rally in Umlazi, south-west of Durban, on Monday.
“We are heartbroken by this immense loss,” said Sinawo Thambo, the national spokesperson for the EFF.
“These were committed fighters who died in the line of duty, having shown their support for the revolution they believed in. They are heroes to whom we owe a tremendous debt.”
The EFF confirmed that the vehicle was transporting members who had come to the rally to honour the courage of the youth of 1976 and further the fight for economic independence.
Thambo emphasised the significance of their sacrifices.
Support for affected families
“These fighters lost their lives in service to our cause. Their memory will live on as we continue the fight for economic freedom,” he said.
He added that the EFF is collaborating closely with law enforcement to identify the deceased and offer assistance to their families.
“We are ensuring that families are informed and supported during this difficult time,” he said, adding that the party extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.
“We pray for healing and strength for all affected. The EFF will honour the fallen through unwavering commitment to the struggle they championed.”
In March, about seven ANC supporters died in a bus crash after the party’s manifesto launch in Mpumalanga.
In the same month, nine more people lost their lives while returning home near eDumbe in KwaZulu-Natal. Numerous other party members sustained injuries.
They had been at the ANC’s Mayihlome rally at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
