Ex-Sundowns, Al-Ahly star gets R500 bail for ‘assaulting’ girlfriend

Former Al-Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns dribbling wizard Phakamani Mahlambi was released on R500 bail this week by the Kempton Park magistrate’s court. This after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

Gauteng police spokesperson Col Noxolo Kweza said police are investigating a case of assault following the arrest of 26-year-old Mahlambi on Tuesday.

Kweza said Mahlambi appeared at the Kempton Park magistrate’s court on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend at their home.

Kweza said the victim opened a case at Sebenza Police Station.

When asked about how and when the alleged assault happened, Kweza said: “Unfortunately I cannot release that. It forms part of our investigations.”

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said Mahlambi was on Wednesday released on R500 bail.

Mjonondwane said the matter was postponed to May 22 for Mahlambi’s legal representation.

Mahlambi started his professional career in 2015 with now-defunct South African club Bidvest Wits. He played for Bidvest Wits until 2017.

Mahlambi won the ABSA Premiership with Bidvest Wits during the 2016–2017 league season.

He also won the 2016 MTN 8 with the club.

In the 2017–2018 season, Mahlambi joined Egyptian giants Al-Ahly, where he only played one season.

Mahlambi won the 2017-2018 Egyptian Premier League with Al-Ahly.

He then joined Sundowns in 2018, spending four seasons at the Pretoria-based club.

He won two league titles, a Telkom Knockout and a Nedbank Cup, during his time with the Brazilians.

Mahlambi had a loan spell at KwaZulu-Natal side Amazulu while he was still a Sundowns player.

In August 2021, Sundowns released him and he joined Eastern Cape side Chippa United.
