The distraught family of a Bloemfontein teacher who was found dead on Sunday learnt of her death through social media.
Ramokone Moroane, the brother of 48-year-old Khethiwe Nkambule who was discovered shot dead near the South Park Cemetery in Bloemfontein, saw the gruesome pictures of her sibling on social media.
“Whoever posted her pictures said she was a prostitute who was murdered and dumped near the cemetery,” said Moroane.
Nkambule was a teacher at Bainsvlei Combined School in Bloemfontein, which falls under the Motheo education district.
Moroane said he last spoke to Nkambule on November 24.
Department condemns killing
“She did not respond to my messages. I called her on Saturday with no luck,” Moroane told Sunday World on Wednesday evening.
The department of education in the Free State has condemned the killing of Nkambule, just a few days into the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, which is observed worldwide to raise awareness against gender-based violence.
“The department of education wishes to pass its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Ms Khethiwe Nkambule,” said Free State education spokesperson Howard Ndaba.
“The condolences also go to the school community of Bainsvlei Combined School, especially the staff members, learners and SGB [school governing body], as well as her friends, neighbors and everyone that formed a close cycle of influence in her life.
“The department condemns in a strongest possible term the senseless and brutal killing of this female teacher.”
Psychosocial support
Nkambule joined Bainsvlei Combined School in March 2017 from Matshediso Primary School in Brandfort. Bainsvlei is a farm school with boarding facilities.
“The department is providing psychosocial support to both learners and educators of Bainsvlei Combined School,” said Ndaba.
Moroane said after seeing the gruesome pictures of Nkambule on social media, he was later informed that her sister was discovered by vagrants who lived in a dumping site near the cemetery.
“Apparently they saw the car that dumped her at around 11pm and midnight on Saturday,” said a devastated Moroane.
“They said because it was dark, they could not identify the car nor the person driving the vehicle.”
Sunday World has established that Nkambule’s boyfriend, whom she lived with in her house, was taken in for questioning by police on Tuesday. He was released later on Tuesday.
“My sister was booked to be admitted at a facility for stress on Monday, but she did not live that long to make it to the hospital.
“My sister was very energetic and full of life. I want justice for my sister. The police must do their job and not leave any stone unturned,” said the distressed brother.
