Former Joburg mayor Mpho Moerane still alive and recovering in hospital

Mpho Moerane has not died, said his family on Monday, slamming widespread reports that the former Joburg mayor passed away on Sunday.

“We want to confirm that Moerane is not dead, he is still in hospital where he is stable and recovering,” said family spokesperson Mike Maile.

“We appeal to all those who are spreading the fake news announcing his death to desist from such as their actions are hurtful to the family, friends and Moerane’s comrades.”

When news “broke” about the ANC caucus leader’s “death”, Maile tweeted that it was in fact Mpho Mashini who had died. Moerane was involved in a car accident last week and is still in hospital.

Moerane was the mayor of Joburg for a month last year after the death of his predecessor, Jolidee Matongo, in September following a car accident.
