A Free State court has sentenced Albert Tamasane, a 47-year-old pastor, to two life terms for raping a 12-year-old girl.
The Edenburg regional court in Bloemfontein also gave the convicted rapist an additional five years for sexual assault.
The sentences for the second rape count and sexual assault will run concurrently with the first rape conviction, reflecting the severity of the crimes committed between 2019 and 2022.
Crimes came to light in 2022
The case, which has shocked the Edenburg community, highlights the ongoing fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa.
According to the court, the crimes came to light in 2022 when the victim, then 12, confided in her father during school holidays about the abuse she endured while living with Tamasane and his wife.
The rape occurred in the absence of Tamasane’s wife, who worked night shifts, leaving the minor vulnerable.
The Edenburg police station promptly opened a case, leading to Tamasane’s arrest.
“The courage of the young victim in speaking out was instrumental in bringing this perpetrator to justice,” said Sergeant Ntsepe.
“This case sends a clear message that no one, regardless of their position, is above the law.”
Community feels betrayed
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) hailed the sentencing as a victory in the battle against sexual violence.
Regional NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane stated that the outcome reflects the NPA’s ongoing dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring justice for victims of GBV.
“We commend the victim’s bravery and the dedication of our prosecution team.”
The Edenburg community remains shaken, grappling with the betrayal by a trusted figure.
“It’s devastating that someone in a position of spiritual leadership could commit such acts,” said one of the residents, Thandi Mokoena. “We hope the incident brings some healing to the victim.”
The case emphasises the critical role of community vigilance and robust legal action in addressing sexual violence, with authorities urging survivors to report abuses to ensure that justice prevails.
