Gautrain freezes fares, extends R1 parking relief for commuters

High-speed commuter train Gautrain has announced that it will not implement its annual fare increase on June 1, offering financial relief to commuters amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures largely owing to high fuel prices.

The decision means fares across the premium rail network service will remain unchanged, benefiting thousands of daily passengers who rely on the system for work and travel in Gauteng.

The company confirmed the decision in a press release. This comes at a time when households are grappling with rising fuel prices and transport costs.

In addition to holding fares steady, the Gautrain Management Agency confirmed that its popular R1 parking promotion will remain in place until September. The initiative allows commuters to park at Gautrain stations for just R1 per day when using the train, making integrated travel more cost-effective.

Easing commuters’ financial burden

Gautrain Management Agency CEO Tshepo Kgobe said the decision was aimed at easing the financial burden on commuters while maintaining a high-quality service.

“At a time when many households are under financial pressure, our priority is to ensure that Gautrain remains a trusted and affordable transport option,” said Kgobe.

“By keeping fares unchanged for 2026 and extending our R1 parking initiative, we are reinforcing our commitment to accessible mobility while continuing to deliver a safe, reliable, efficient and world-class commuter experience.”

The Gautrain continues to play a critical role in Gauteng’s transport network, helping to reduce congestion on major roads, support economic activity and provide a reliable alternative to private vehicle use.

With its focus on safety, efficiency and customer experience, the rail system remains one of the country’s leading public transport services, positioning itself as a key driver of sustainable urban mobility.
