George Lebese still out in the cold but his hopes remain up

Johannesburg – Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns left-winger George Lebese’s frustrations continue with his search for a PSL club not yielding positive results.

Lebese told Sunday World that starting this week, he would be training with Tsepo Masilela in Pretoria. Masilela is keeping fit in the off-season with the hope that Ama- Zulu will give him a contract extension.

Lebese was recently training with Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivandhila, whose name was changed to Marumo Gallants this week, but the club had to let him go due to the unavailability of his international clearance papers.

“We will have to wait and see what happens in this off-season when the transfer window opens. I do not think I will be going back to the US; their season is already underway and finishes at the end of the year,” said Lebese.

“I have been training on my own this week, but I will be joining and training with Tsepo. It is no secret that I am looking for a club and I will go where there’s bread. I do not have an agent, but I have approached some guys who are assisting me in this regard.

“I am confident that when next season starts, I will have a club so that I can revive my career,” said the 32-year-old Mamelodi- born midfielder.

The former Amakhosi pinup boy has been on the books of Colorado Springs Switchbacks since last year when he joined them.

The professional soccer team and a member of the USL Championship is in the second tier of the American soccer pyramid. Lebese parted ways with the club amicably after the implementation of stricter Covid-19 regulations and a travel ban in the US, which prevented him from travelling.

Earlier this year, he was supposed to return to the US, but the move did not materialise after he failed to get his international clearance certificate from Switchbacks. It has emerged that Marumo Gallants’ technical team are still following his progress closely and they are likely to offer him a short-term contract in the local Premiership. Lebese’s career took a major dip when he left Chiefs and joined Sundowns in a well-publicised move.

He struggled to impress then Downs coach Pitso Mosimane and was loaned out to neighbours SuperSport United.

Things also did not work out at Matsatsantsa a Pitori, and he found his way to Switchbacks in the US.
