Groundbreaking job-creation campaign in the pipeline in KZN

The provincial government in KwaZulu-Natal will on Thursday unveil a groundbreaking campaign to create jobs.

The campaign, which will be launched at Curries Fountain in Durban, is part of the government’s interventions to reduce unemployment among young people in the province.

Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, and KwaZulu-Natal transport, community safety and liaison MEC Sipho Hlomuka are expected to preside over the launch.

Dubbed S’thesha Waya Waya (working throughout), the campaign is an initiative of the provincial department of transport and forms part of a commitment made by Dube-Ncube during her state of the province address earlier this year.

At the time, Dube-Ncube committed that all provincial government departments will set aside funds to combat unemployment as part of the “war room on job creation”.

The drive has already seen more than 6 000 young people getting jobs in the provincial department of transport.

“The launch will pull more than 6 000 participants who are part of initiatives, such as the Vukayibambe Routine Road Maintenance Programme [VRRMP], National Youth Services, Road Safety Ambassadors, Walking Bus [road safety crossing], Social Crime Prevention Programme, graduate interns and law graduates,” the department said.

One of the young people who has been given a job opportunity under the VRRMP, Nompilo Ntuli, said her life has changed for the better since she became part of the programme, noting that she is now able to support her family.

“Through the programme, I’m learning a number of skills which will enable me to open my own company,” said Ntuli.

“As a breadwinner, I’m now able to put food on the table and save little money to pay for other skills training.”
