An e-hailing taxi driver was killed and his female passenger injured in a shooting in Amoutana in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday evening.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) general manager Vinod Singh said his operations centre received a call for assistance around 9pm. Officers immediately rushed to the scene and when they arrived a white Toyota Etios was parked on the side of the road.
Windows riddled with bullets
They reported the windows on the driver’s side and windscreen were riddled with bullets.
The driver was deceased and a female passenger (28) had bullet wounds to her right thigh and buttocks. An additional three passengers were unharmed. They told the reaction officers that they had hired the e-hailing taxi and were en route to Amoutana.
As they pulled off in poor visibility because of heavy rain, an unknown man opened fire at the deceased then walked away, they said.
The shooter returned to empty his weapon on his victims
They added the shooter turned around and fired more shots before getting into an unknown getaway vehicle.
They said when emergency personnel arrived, the driver had succumbed to his injuries so they took the woman to hospital.
Singh said about 17 9mm bullet casings were recovered at the scene.
Sunday World contacted the local police station, Verulam north of Durban. The newspaper was informed that the spokesperson, a constable Ngcobo, was off-duty therefore unavailable to speak to the media.
