In a heartfelt address at KwaPhindangene palace on Monday, King MisuZulu kaZwelithini paid his respects to the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
The AmaZulu king acknowledged the profound impact that Buthelezi had on his life and reign.
Buthelezi, who passed away on September 9 aged 95, was laid to rest at his ancestral home in eMahlabathini outside Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
Buthelezi’s legacy, however, extends far beyond his impressive lifespan, it reaches into the heart of Zulu royalty.
Speaking during the period of mourning, King MisuZulu expressed deep sorrow over Buthelezi’s passing, saying that the news deeply touched him.
He highlighted Buthelezi’s unwavering commitment to the truth throughout his life, noting that although he could not attend the funeral, he was there in spirit.
He shared fond memories of the late prince, recalling how Buthelezi supported him from the moment he was born.
In a poignant statement, he said: “Had it not been for him, I would not be here or alive.”
The relationship between MisuZulu and Buthelezi had been marked by strong camaraderie, particularly during the turbulent period surrounding the succession to the AmaZulu throne.
Buthelezi played a pivotal role in advocating for MisuZulu’s installation as the king, a move that solidified their bond.
However, in the twilight of Buthelezi’s life, tensions emerged.
The king’s decision not to attend the funeral also prompted speculation about their strained relationship.
Nevertheless, the king’s spokesperson, Prince Africa Zulu, clarified that cultural policies and protocols prevented the king from attending the funeral.
“Unfortunately, His Majesty is unable to attend his prime minister’s funeral as the king is forbidden by cultural policies that dictate his reign,” Zulu told Sunday World last week.
He explained that if the king was only a prince, he would have no qualms attending the funeral proceedings.
“This is one of the sad things about being a Zulu king, it is a lonely journey indeed
