Heated exchange over learner’s dreadlocks ends up in court

Andries Hendrik Booysen, the husband of Crowthorne Christian Academy principal, is out on R2 000 bail after he appeared in the Midrand magistrate’s court for assault.

The Midrand school made headlines this week after a learner was taken to task because of her natural dreadlocks.

In a viral video dated August 14, the 51-year-old Booysen can be seen pushing the learner and her mother out of the door.

The mother can also be heard accusing Booysen and his wife of being racists.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwana said Booysen’s bail conditions prevent him from contacting or interfering with state witnesses.

The case has been postponed to October 2 for further investigations.

The Gauteng department of education said the school has been operating illegally and has since closed following the incident.

According to reports, the school has sent out a WhatsApp message to parents alerting them about the closure, however, it did not indicate if and when it will reopen.
