The inconvenience caused by rolling power cuts throughout the country continues to be felt by many South Africans, rich and poor.
This dire situation has driven some people to look to inverters as another way to dodge the blackouts, but one such family is counting costs after the device allegedly exploded and destroyed their property.
Their home in one of the estates in Kyalami, Johannesburg was destroyed by a raging fire on Tuesday afternoon, and the blame has been put squarely on the inverter.
According to reports, the estate received a call from one of its residents about fire that had broken out at her house.
After the fire had been put out, Fidelity, a security company keeping guard at the estate, revealed that it was an inverter that had caused it.
Speaking to Sunday World on Wednesday, Johannesburg emergency management services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed the incident and said the cause of the fire is being investigated.
“Yes, we did respond to the incident but the cause of the fire is still a subject of an investigation,” said Mulaudzi.
