The search for Action SA’s Joburg mayoral candidate is far from over and the party will not compromise on quality.
This is according to ActionSA President Herman Mashaba following the revelation that anti-drugs activist Xolani Khumalo will stand for the mayoral chain race in Ekurhuleni with Dr Nasiphi Moya seeking re-election in Tshwane.
While many have called for Mashaba to raise his hand for Joburg, he says the party is looking for someone else, but of the same quality as Khumalo and Moya.
But if all fails in the search, the last throw of the dice will be to field Mashaba. This is billed to be a battle of the titans in Joburg.
Mashaba pleaded for patience in allowing ActionSA to exhaust its internal processes to search for a qualitative Joburg mayoral candidate before next year’s bruising local government elections.
Internal processes
“Action SA is still running our internal processes to find a qualitative candidate for Joburg, much to the level of Nasiphi Moya or Xolani Khumalo, nothing less,” said Mashababa
“In the event that we do not find that kind of a person, I’m more than happy to avail myself. But for now we plead to be given space to run our internal processes. We are not under pressure, but give us the time.”
Should Mashaba stand for Joburg, he will go toe-to-toe with his former boss when he was in the DA and had the mayoral chain of Joburg in 2016 with the assistance of the EFF.
The PA has fielded its controversial deputy president Kenny Kunene. While the likes of ANC; MKP and EFF are playing their cards close to their chest.
However, MKP head of elections Bongani Baloyi is said to be the preferred candidate for the party’s boss Jacob Zuma.
A contest between Zille, Mashaba and Baloyi would be stuff of movies. With the trio having once drank from the same calabash and finishing from the same pond of voters.
