Joburg residents urged to be on high alert for possible floods

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) is on high alert in response to the South African Weather Service’s level-two warning.

According to SA meteorological reports on Monday, there will be strong thunderstorms that could result in flash floods in most parts of the city and the surrounding areas.

“We have noted with concern the level 2 warning issued by the South African Weather Services for severe thunderstorms,” said EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

“However, the City of Joburg EMS aquatic rescue unit, which is a specialised unit that responds to water-related emergencies, remains on high alert, monitoring all seven regions of the City of Johannesburg.”

He advised the residents to refrain from crossing river streams while going about their regular business.

“Monitor young children to stay away from river streams and drainage systems; motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving, extend safe following distance, and avoid crossing flooded roads and low-lying bridges.”

Disaster management teams are on standby

According to Mulaudzi, disaster management monitoring teams have been sent to all seven zones of the City of Johannesburg in an attempt to be proactive.

Their job is to either monitor the situation or help citizens who may be impacted by the severe thunderstorms that are expected to occur overnight by providing assistance and relief.

“For life-threatening emergencies, residents are urged to call our emergency call centre on 011 375 5911.”

In the past, there have been numerous instances of floods sweeping people away.

A woman in her 30s was on Witkoppen Road in January when the water overtook her vehicle as she was headed home in Cosmo City.

The tragedy happened after regions of Gauteng had severe rainfall that caused flooding.

Members of the search and rescue team looked in the Crocodile River, while others searched near Lanseria along the Juskei River for the victim.

Ultimately, the search was called off and the matter was handed over to the police.
