Joint RTMC, Hawks operation nets former driving school instructor for corruption

In a joint operation, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the Polokwane Hawks’ serious corruption investigation unit apprehended a 30-year-old former driving school instructor.

The former instructor, who has not been identified, is charged with engaging in corrupt and dishonest practices at the Lephalale testing station.

According to sources, the suspect acted as a dubious intermediary between 2020 and 2021, offering bribes and exerting influence to facilitate unscrupulous transactions at the testing station.

It was also discovered that this man served as a middleman, ensuring that dishonest officials and driving schools received what they desired in exchange for a fee.

The bust is a part of a massive crackdown that has already resulted in the handcuffing of 14 other suspects between February and June, including traffic officials, driving school owners, and even a former traffic examiner.

Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa stated that the accused instructor will soon appear in court at Lephalale magistrate’s court.

In a separate case, a 41-year-old general assistant from the Western Cape’s Knysna local municipality has been arrested and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday after being linked to a corruption case.

He was arrested on Wednesday at his place of employment. The Hawks’ serious corruption investigation team from George made the arrest.

According to the Hawks, the suspect was allegedly paid R37 500 by two members of the public between September 2019 and November 2021 in exchange for working for the Knysna municipality.

“The first victim paid an amount of R30 000, and the second one paid R7 500,” Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani, the spokesperson for the police, said.

According to Hani, the victims lost R37500 in total as a result of the suspect’s illegal actions, and they were not given the jobs that the suspect had promised them.
