Justice served for mentally challenged rape victim

Justice has been served for a teenage girl who was sexually violated by a 57-year-old man.

This after the Gqeberha regional court condemned the culprit to life in prison for the teen’s rape during sentencing this week.

According to police, the incident happened in March 2022. A police report states that the 15-year-old mentally challenged victim was visiting her neighbour in Kuyga when the man attacked and raped her.

Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said when the neighbour fell asleep, the convicted rapist lured the victim to the kitchen where he undressed and forced himself on her.

“While the convict was busy, a witness arrived at the house and peeped through the keyhole and saw what the accused was doing,” said Van Rensburg.

“The rape was immediately reported to the victim’s family and the perpetrator was arrested on the same day.”

Nelson Mandela Bay district commissioner, Major-General Vuyisile Ncata, condemned the rape and welcomed the sentencing.

“As we have just commemorated Child Protection Week, we need to place emphasis on raising awareness on the protection of our children against abuse, exploitation, negligence and all forms of violence,” said Ncata.

“This rapist took advantage of a helpless young teenager. It is time for all of us to act together to stop the abuse.”
