KwaDukuza municipality could fork out R2m to fund maskandi event

The KwaDukuza local municipality outside Durban could, in the near future, find itself forking out R2-million to fund a maskandi event called the Inqwele Maskandi Festival.

This comes after a local company called Nonortainment, believed to be owned by a politically connected person, submitted a proposal to have the event funded by the ANC-run municipality that has lurched from one financial scandal to another in the past six months under the leadership of mayor Ali Ngidi.

The request for the funding was supposed to be tabled for a council resolution on Thursday last week, but it was removed at the 11th hour.

According to insiders, the item was removed after red flags were raised about the company’s record in hosting events and the alleged proximity of its owner to Ngidi.

“The municipality received a sponsorship request from Nonortainment for the Inqwele Maskandi Festival. This event aims to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of maskandi music, bringing together both locals and those returning from afar,” reads part of the motivation for the council to approve funding.

No council resolution

“With live performances from the talented maskandi artists, the organisers anticipate a vibrant gathering that fosters community spirit, cultural pride, and enjoyment during the festive time.”

Even though most maskandi festivals in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng are always marred by violence between supporters of various popular artists, the proposed one is being promoted as being family friendly.

“Community engagement: to create a space for families and communities to come together, celebrating shared experiences and achievements,” reads part of the document that was to be tabled before the council but was later withdrawn.

The spokesperson for the municipality, Nokulunga Mashabane, said the proposal was received, but there is no council resolution.

“The proposal was received, but there is no council resolution for this request. No item has been prepared for this event,” she said.
