KwaZakhele mass shooting suspect’s bail hearing postponed

Mzwandile Mahambehlala, charged with the mass shooting that led to the deaths of eight people in KwaZakhele, Gqeberha in January appeared briefly at the New Brighton magistrate’s court on Monday where his bail hearing was postponed.

The 33-year-old still has to find an attorney, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which is opposing bail.

The suspect is expected back in court on Monday.

NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said Mahambehlala was arrested on March 3 at a house in Walmer, Gqeberha.

“The police reported that two armed men entered a yard in Makanda Street in KwaZakele on January 29 and shot at guests attending a birthday celebration,” said Mahambehlala.

“Eleven people were shot during the attack, seven people were certified dead on the scene, one succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, and three sustained serious injuries.”

The police are still searching for other men suspected to have been involved in the attack.
