Recently departed Ukhozi FM presenter Irvin Sihlophe almost resorted to ending his life owing to financial distress.
This was disclosed by his bosom friend Lucky Gxabhashe, who said the late radio man confided in him that his life was in danger. He said Sihlophe said izinkabi (hired hitmen) were on his trail and even sent threatening Whatsapp messages.
The threats emanated from alleged failure to pay some artists Sihlophe had featured in his annual Uvukile Gospel Festival.
Gxabhashe said Sihlophe’s financial problems began when he was removed from a well-paying sports slot to an education programme.
Two years ago the SABC embarked on drastic changes where contributors and permanent staff were either retrenched or given new contracts, which some deemed as unsatisfactory. Gxabhashe said: “After those changes at the SABC his lifestyle and gospel events business were hugely affected. He struggled to adjust to the new situation and when financial problems mounted, he couldn’t take it anymore.
“I couldn’t believe my ears when he told he was thinking of taking his own life and spare himself more misery. I talked him out of that nonsense and encouraged him to forge ahead with life, with the belief that things would change.”
Gxabashe’s story was corroborated by Lucky Nkosi, Sihlophe’s ex-colleague at Ukhozi FM. “At some stage he cried uncontrollably before me and I told him to man up. I believe he could still be alive had he accepted a job at some local municipality. Perhaps the financial burden would have been eased but he was stubborn for his radio passion.”
Deep love for radio
Apart for his love for broadcasting, Sihlophe has been hailed by the authorities of Umuziwabantu municipality, where he hails from. He is credited for being an active member of the community in which he organised developmental events for the youth.
The 44-year-old charismatic Sihlophe suffered a stroke and succumbed to illness in his hospital bed a week ago. On Sunday, he was laid to rest at his Harding home, KZN south coast, in a funeral of royal proportions.
In attendance were high profile personalities including politicians, business leaders and entertainment industry stars.
