Limpopo police have arrested a man in connection with the attempted murder of his stepmother.
The 33-year-old man allegedly attacked his stepmother with a sharp object in the middle of a heated argument at their home in October. He then fled the scene and went into hiding in another area.
According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the man was arrested at Madimbo village in Vhembe district on November 2.
According to preliminary police investigations, the suspect and the stepmother had a heated argument which led the suspect allegedly using a sharp object to stab the woman. She sustained severe injuries in the upper body and was rushed to a local hospital where she received treatment.
The motive for the incident is not clear but Mashaba said unconfirmed reports suggest that the family members had internal conflict over cattle which the suspect was allegedly selling without the family’s consent.
Mashaba said the man fled the scene after the attack and the incident was reported at Masisi police station where a case of attempted murder was opened.
“Police received information about the location of the suspect. Investigations led them to his hideout at Madimbo village [where he was] arrested on Thursday November 2,” Mashaba said.
He said the suspect is expected to appear in the Masisi periodical court soon.
Man wanted for sister’s rape
In the second incident, police are hunting for a 26-year-old man for the rape of his 16-year-old sister. The incident happened at the siblings’ home at Babanana village, near Tzaneen, at about 10pm on September 21.
According to police, the victim was asleep in the bedroom she shares with the 26 year-old and another 11-year-old brother.
“The victim shares sleeping space with the younger brother. [On the night of the attack] the elder brother entered the sleeping space of his younger siblings. He allegedly undressed the victim and raped her while the younger brother was asleep.
“The following day the victim went to school without informing anyone [about the rape]. Fortunately, while at school, the victim was confronted by one of the educators who noticed that something was wrong with her. The teenager informed the educator that she was raped by her brother in the evening.”
However, according to police, it took up to October 30 before the teacher could tell the victim’s mother about the rape.
On November 1, the mother approached a social worker about the matter. The social advised to accompany the mother to Letsitele police station where the case was opened.
The suspect is currently on the run and police are asking for information that could lead to his arrest.
