Man gets 25 years in jail for stabbing and setting his lover on fire

In a terrifying instance of gender-based violence (GBV), 31-year-old Motlatsi Mpharu was sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Eastern Cape’s Sterkspruit regional court for attempting to kill his girlfriend, Mpho Kutoana, who is 20 years old.

The terrible event, which happened in Slindini village in January, shocked the local community and brought attention to the persistent problem of GBV.

The court heard on Thursday that an argument broke out over unfounded allegations of infidelity while Kutoana was paying Mpharu a visit at his house.

Tied up with cable and set on fire

Out of anger, Mpharu stabbed Kutoana in the left thigh, doused her with petrol, tied her up with an electric cable and set her on fire.

During the attack, Mpharu also sustained burns while attempting to extinguish the fire.

After being taken to Mpilisweni Hospital, Kutoana spent two months recuperating from her severe burn injuries. She is permanently disabled as a result of the attack.

In her horrific testimony, the victim told the prosecution how the attack had destroyed her life.

The burns shortened her arms, making it impossible for her to perform basic tasks like bathing or making her bed.

Her vision has become worse, she has trouble walking, and she now needs her parents’ help with everyday care.

She is also unable to care for her child and has been forced to drop out of her distance learning programme to earn an IT certification.

Court sends strong message

State prosecutor Anele Magibile emphasised that this case must be viewed in the broader context of the GBV crisis afflicting South Africa.

“A day does not go by without reports of women and children being attacked or killed by men,” said Magibile.

“Society demands harsher sentences for such heinous crimes, and the court must restore public confidence in the justice system.”

The court’s decision sends a strong message against such acts of violence and acknowledges the seriousness of the attack.

Barry Madolo, the director of public prosecutions for the Eastern Cape, said the savage attack underscores the constant danger that many women face in their relationships and homes.

“The National Prosecuting Authority is unwavering in its dedication to securing justice for victims of gender-based violence and providing support to survivors throughout the legal process,” he said.
