MEC to visit Little Ashford preschool following toddler’s death

Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane will on Wednesday visit Little Ashford in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg following the death of a toddler at the preschool.

Three-year-old Kganya Mokhele, who is the grandson of the director and head of Wits Business School professor Maurice Radebe, died in class on Tuesday when a bookshelf fell on him.

Mokhele’s family is demanding to view the CCTV footage to see for themselves what led to the toddler’s death.

Chiloane’s office said according to a briefing it has received, the boy succumbed to injuries after a bookshelf collapsed on him.

“We wish to convey our condolences to the family, friends and the schooling community, Chiloane said.

The early childhood development centre has confirmed the little boy’s death.

The preschool sent its condolences to the family of the child and said it is cooperating with authorities who are investigating the death of the toddler.
