A 34-year-old teacher has been found dead with multiple gunshot wounds near a river in the Eastern Cape.
The teacher was identified as Yonela Mahlungulu from Lusikisiki.
According to the police, Mahlungulu left her Ngobozana home to go to work on Friday and never returned.
The police said she was reported as missing by her husband, who said she did not report for work and had left her phone at home that day.
Investigation
Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu said a team of investigators was able to trace the route that Mahlungulu’s car had travelled.
With assistance from the K9 search unit, rescue dog, named Bond, and members of the community, her body was found and her car was spotted with blood stains.
“A search was launched, and the tracker activation picked up a signal at Bukuveni in Flagstaff. The vehicle was recovered with bloodstains in the boot and the car keys in the ignition. And the deceased was found with bullet wounds to the upper body in an area called Mtsila in Lusikisiki,” said Naidu.
More teachers killed in the area
Mahlungulu is a third teacher who was murdered.
A Lusikisiki school principal was found covered in bullet wounds in October after he was reported missing.
Meanwhile, in August, Eastern Cape-born teacher Nomfusi Potelwa, 48, was also brutally killed in her home in Dutywa, a day before South Africa celebrated Women’s Day.
Potelwa was a teacher at Dinizulu Secondary School and also a well-known poet and singer in the province.
Police said the motive behind the killings is still unknown. Investigations are ongoing.
