Last year Jagerfontein in southern Free State was plunged into national news when a mudslide of apocalyptic proportions rolled into town in the middle of the night. People jumped out of their beds and ran for dear life.
Many were trapped inside their houses by the force of the toxic mud which broke from the mine tailings dam. Unfortunately, others died. The nation was shocked and media houses rushed to the scene to cover the story.
Mayor Xolani Tseletsele shed his small town status and filled TV screens, gleefully giving interviews about the state of disaster in Jagesrfontein. This week the mayor was back before the camera, of a cellphone, being recorded threatening a local man in front of his children. After that, he briskly walks out of the man’s yard, like some tin pot dictator. And what was the man’s fault? He complained on Facebook about potholes in his town. The ANC has responded, suspending Tseletsele from his post as mayor, for giving the party a bad name. He responded with his own social media post, grumbling that his crime is not like he killed someone. We are also responding. Kopanong local municipality executive mayor Tseletsele, you have no peace, despite your name Xolani. We declare you the winner of the Moegoe of the Day title.
