Saturday marked the biggest jump in confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa.
Health minister, Zweli Mkhize, announced last night that the number of infections rose by 251, bringing the total number of people infected with the coronavirus to 3034. There were also two more deaths reported – a total of 52. On a positive note, 903 people have recovered from the coronavirus.
Patients in public health care facilities total 79, while 162 people are in private health care facilities.
“Patients in ICU are 36 and out of those 26 are on ventilators,” said Mkhize.
Mkhize also said that testing has improved, with more than 7000 tests done in the last 24 hours alone – the total number of tests performed completed are 108 021.
He also discouraged people from smoking and drinking alcohol, saying both have a negative impact on people’s health and that people need to be sober to follow regulations.
“The process of the number of people to be tested still needs to be accelerated. The work done by the health workers is to be commended,” said Mkhize.
