Motorists warned as heavy snow causes havoc on Eastern Cape roads

The Alfred Nzo district municipality has temporarily closed its offices, and the N2 highway has experienced numerous disruptions due to heavy snowfall and a tragic accident.

This comes after the N2 between KwaBhaca (formerly Mount Frere) and Kokstad was nearly closed due to an accumulation of snow.

The Eastern Cape transport department warned on Tuesday morning that the situation is getting worse and that travel is becoming more dangerous due to the heavy snow.

Taxi accident claims five lives

In the south, a fatal minibus taxi accident has led to the closure of the N2 between Cintsa and Braakfontein, just outside of East London.

Five people, three women and two men, all adults, died in the crash.

“The driver and one female passenger were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries,” said Unathi Binqose, the spokesperson for the transport department in the province.

“Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and are investigating the cause of the collision.

“Motorists are urged to use alternative routes, such as the old Transkei Road, to avoid the affected stretch [of the highway].”

In addition, Binqose advised drivers to exercise caution and be ready for any road closures.

Outages shut down municipality

Meanwhile, because of network problems and power outages brought on by strong winds, rain, and snow, the Alfred Nzo district municipality temporarily closed its offices.

Onke Diko, the acting municipality manager, stated that while other staff members are available to help residents by phone and email, essential workers will continue to be on duty.

“We regret any inconvenience caused by these disruptions. Our priority is ensuring public safety and maintaining essential services during this challenging period,” Diko said.

“The municipality urges people to avoid crossing flooded roads or low-lying bridges and to drive cautiously in flooded areas.

“Weather updates will be broadcast via radio, television, and government social media channels.
