Murder accused cop claims he was tortured by members of Ipid

A police officer accused of killing his girlfriend who was pregnant with triplets has accused Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) members of assault.

This is according to his attorneys, Ncama and Associates.

They revealed this when Sergeant Mbuyiseni Gema appeared for the second time in the Ixopo magistrate’s court on Friday.

Before stating that they were not ready to proceed with an application for bail and requested a postponement, they told the court that according to their client, the Ipid officials who arrested him assaulted and intimidated him.

They said he made some of the statements under duress because of torture. They further said they will make an application to have the accused detained in an isolated cell.

“The court’s holding cells put our client’s life at risk because he was being held with suspects he had arrested,” they said.

“We have consulted with the state and are going to ask that we are furnished with those copies of the said statements at the next appearance.”

Gema is facing premeditated murder and murder charges after he allegedly killed Busisiwe Ngubo, who was pregnant with his three children.

Ngubo was found dead on the side of the road in eHlanzeni. According to reports, she was killed a day before she was due to give birth to triplets.

Gema remains in custody and the case has been postponed to August 31.
