Mzwakhe Mbuli boycotts SABC over snubbing of his song

Well-known activist Mzwakhe “People’s Poet” Mbuli is seething with anger directed at the public broadcaster.

The muso told Sunday World he was no longer going to allow anyone from the SABC to interview him on any matter.

And what is the beef?

He said the broadcaster was not playing his song, released two years ago, Vuka Darkie.

Mbuli told Sunday World that he had had enough of the abuse from the SABC, hence he was putting a stop to it.

He said various SABC radio station producers have been calling him for interviews, but he decided not to entertain them. He believes that they are taking him for granted.

“My music was banned during apartheid, and now this. Since I released Vuka Darkie and used the SABC studios to launch it, my song has never been played. Now I am being bombarded with calls by the SABC producers who want to interview me about many things, including my biography. I am not interested. They should just leave me alone, as I don’t need the SABC for relevance,” said Mbuli.

He said that the producers told him that they are getting pressure from his fans to put him on air.

“I have done so many things for this country, and I am not going to be subjected to mediocrity. I am not a mafikizolo who would be treated badly and later be chased for interviews,” he said.

Mbuli said that he is focused on his Siyabakhumbula Awards and biography.

“I am too old to be fighting about this, and as such, the SABC should just leave me alone. I am not interested in doing any interviews with the broadcaster. I am no longer setting foot in the SABC. I am not forcing the SABC to play my song, but if they play it, all will be forgotten,” said Mbuli.

SABC spokesperson Mmoni Ngubane had not responded to our request for comment at the time of going to print.
