Sizwe Zako, a pioneer figure in South African gospel and jazz music, will receive his flowers while still alive. On May 23, he will be awarded an honorary doctorate from Nelson Mandela University in recognition of his lifelong commitment to uplifting others through music.
Speaking about this milestone, he said: “I didn’t go to school for music. But I’ve always been passionate about education, I’ve always wanted to go to school.”
Self-taught musician
As a self-taught pianist and producer, he asked his mother for a musical instrument instead of Christmas clothes in 1978. This moment sparked the start of an extraordinary legacy.
“When other kids wanted Christmas clothes, I asked my mother for a piano because I wanted to learn. That was the beginning of everything.”
After the award, there will be celebrations of his legacy which will take place on June 15, in Johannesburg.
Zako played a key role in discovering new talent through the Shell Road to Fame competition. He helped to kickstart the careers of many cherished South African artists.
Beyond his impact in music, Zako remains committed to giving back by supporting the Sizwe Zako Youth & Performing Arts Academy, which offers music education and mentorship to underprivileged youth in collaboration with Nelson Mandela University.
40 year music career
His career spans over four decades, during which he has shaped the sound of African music and inspired generations of artists. This upcoming event is meant to honour his contributions to the music industry.
Starting from modest roots in New Brighton, Eastern Cape, Zako’s journey is defined by passion, talent, and vision.
He also collaborated with some of the nation’s most legendary artists. These include Rebecca Malope and Abigail Kubeka. It did not end there, as he also worked with two late gospel artists, Vuyo Mokoena and Israel Mosehla, to name a few.
He is the creative mind behind a host of award-winning gospel and jazz albums. And his influence is evident in some of South Africa’s biggest musical hits. His productions have earned him SAMAs, Crown Gospel Awards, and widespread acclaim throughout the continent.
