A female student at Nelson Mandela University (NMU) was stabbed to death on Tuesday night allegedly by a male student at the George campus residence.
The suspect was apprehended and placed in police custody.
The university has extended its condolences to the family of the deceased student.
“Counselling and other support mechanisms, including pastoral services, have been arranged for students and staff affected by this tragedy. Affected students are encouraged to approach Emthonjeni Student Wellness while staff can access support through staff wellness interventions on campus.”
Piko added that the university, specifically the George campus had been shaken by this tragic incident.
“As the university, especially affected students and staff, deals with the resultant emotions, we appeal for calm and sensitivity while the police investigation runs its course,” said the university.
