Nephew shot when gunmen opened fire, torched councillor’s home

The nephew of an ANC chief whip in the Port St Johns local municipality escaped with injuries when unknown suspects fired shots through the window of his home on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said the incident happened at about 11pm at Nonyevu township in the Eastern Cape.

It is alleged that the councillor’s house, where the nephew was staying, was also torched. The councillor was not at home during the attack.

“During the shooting, three occupants managed to flee, but a 33-year-old nephew sustained a gunshot wound in the lower body and was rushed to the hospital. Two other occupants, among them a five-year-old boy, escaped unscathed,” said Nkohli.

“Subsequent to the incident, a house was found engulfed in flames, which was extinguished by fire fighters.”

Nkholi added that the police are investigating a case of attempted murder with an additional charge of arson. Police are also calling on anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station.
