No link between multiple murders and ongoing Cape taxi strike

Police in the Western Cape are investigating the murder of five people in Mbekweni on Monday night.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Andrè Traut, police responded to a complaint after gunshots rang out at a residence on Chris Hani Street.

Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of three men aged 12, 14 and 42 and two women aged 32 and 39 dead already.

“The motive for the multiple murders is yet to be determined and arrests are yet to be affected,” said Traut.

“At this stage, there is no indication that the incident is linked to the ongoing taxi strike in the province.”

Meanwhile, at least two people have been killed in the violence associated with the taxi strike which started on Wednesday last week. Three others have been injured.

On Monday, a person was killed in a shooting near the Cape Town International Airport when a group of protestors pelted a car with stones.

The driver responded by allegedly firing shots at them, police said on Monday.

The other victim died of multiple gunshot wounds in a separate shooting that police believe was related to the protests.
