Top ANC politicians in the North West said they are convinced that the ANC will win because they have been at the forefront of ensuring that services are provided to the province’s residents.
On Wednesday, the North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi, and the Mayor of Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Khumalo Molefe, voted at Mmabatho High School in Unit 2 and Mildred Mogapi Primary School in Extension 39.
The two sang the same song, saying they were confident that the ANC will win. Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality is in charge of providing much-needed water to residents. Molefe said he has not reached a point where water is no longer a concern. However, he has managed to move the municipality from a disclaimer to an improved audit outcome.
Turned municipality around
“I was given the most problematic municipality ever, but I have managed to turn things around. We are not on a disclaimer anymore. And I believe things are going to be better from here going forward.
Motsumi said that since taking over as MEC for Education, she has made a few strides. She said she has worked to build additional schools and eliminate overcrowding.
“We are encountering overcrowding in our schools and it’s a positive sign. This shows that as the ANC we have done a lot. It means we can confirm that every African child in South Africa and the North West province can access education. And remember that most of our schools are free, the rate of dropouts now is less. We no longer encounter challenges.
She said the ANC has consistently provided food and sanitary towels to pupils from impoverished communities.
“I am confident that come this seventh administration, we are going to continue where we have stopped. More schools are coming. You have seen within a very short period the ANC made sure that we build schools in all regions of the province. So we are going to continue to build more schools. We will continue to provide our learners from disadvantaged areas with free education. This is something that we know will build future leaders of the North West province,” she said.
The two said they were happy with the diversity that they saw when they arrived at their respective voting station.
“I feel very excited because I have taken part together with all South Africans to defend and advance our freedom and democracy. Democracy will collapse if South Africans forget their responsibility to continue to defend it through a ballot.
Today’s elections were peaceful
“We do not need an AK47 or a bomb anymore. South Africans need to remember that … our democracy is developing. This despite all the challenges. It is developing at the rate at which the world continues to marvel. The ANC is going to win these elections,” he said.
Molefe said he was humbled by the diversity of South Africans. “It’s not only ANC people, you see different kinds of political parties. But you see peace, no threats or violence when there are differences. They are resolved, and that is South Africa for you.”
Excited and confident
“We are going to emerge victorious in these elections. New political parties… do not scare us. This is the fruit of democracy. As the ANC, we are very happy that indeed democracy is finding expression in South Africa. This is something that we fought for as the ANC. We don’t have doubts, we are not panicking at all.
“Because we have done our work as the ANC. Looking at where we come from and the strides that we have made. The positive stories that we can tell. We are confident that citizens of North West will vote for the ANC,” Motsumi said.
