Five bodies have now been found in the Hennops River, two of which are thought to be those of missing Free State police officers, according to deputy police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.
Sibiya said members of the police have been searching the Centurion’s wide river for a third missing female police officer who vanished last week while travelling from Bloemfontein to Limpopo with two other officers.
Constables Cebekhulu Linda, Keamogetswe Buys, and Boipelo Senoge went missing last Wednesday while travelling to their Limpopo deployment region.
On Tuesday, police confirmed to have recovered two bodies, a male and female, along the river on Monday.
Police were directed by evidence to the N1 highway, close to a bridge that crosses the Hennops River.
They informed the media that two more bodies have been found at the same location where search efforts are going on.
Identification of bodies
“They started combing yesterday [Monday], and that’s the first thing they found: two bodies.
“The search continued this morning. We are still searching for the vehicle, that VW Polo vehicle that we have been circulating but that has still not been found,” said national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
Mathe said the family members of the two officers had arrived in Pretoria and were being briefed by investigators before the identification of bodies.
The three constables were reported missing last Wednesday, sparking a frantic search and a R350 000 reward for information leading to their whereabouts.
They were driving a white VW Polo sedan (registration JCL 401 FS) when they were last spotted at an Engen garage close to the Grasmere toll plaza on the N1 highway.
Police said when the vehicle they were travelling in left the fuel station, the vehicle’s tracking device and the officers’ cellphones were switched off.
