Straight & 2 Beers: Celeb divorces a public affair

Divorce is nothing to sniff at. It is traumatic and difficult, even when the couple presents a
brave face. The situation gets complicated when there are children involved. So imagine
my shock when celebrity couple Minnie Dlamini and her beau, Quinton Jones announced
they were headed to splitsville after four years.

The “it couple” tied the knot in 2017 in a fairytale wedding celebrated in a three-part series titled Becoming Mrs. Jones. The couple set social media ablaze this week in a joint statement about their parting of ways. Poor Minnie caught the flak like she was solely responsible for the break-up, though it takes two to tango.

The problem with celebrities is that members of the public feel they have a stake in
their lives.

Despite their carefully the worded statement, the rumour mill went into overdrive and their marriage was branded a gimmick. Just last week, DJ Fresh and his radio personality wife of 20 years, Thabiso Sikwane, announced their silver cup was broken. Their joint statement only served to fuel speculation as DJ Fresh has been embroiled in a sex scandal in recent times.

US rapper Kanye West was booed by unsympathetic spectators when he arrived at the Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles with his children last Sunday. Kanye had recently gone
on Instagram to rant against his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, and her current boyfriend
Pete Davidson. The giant jumbotron screens beamed Kanye in a grey hoodie with a black
mask covering his face.

“He stood out because he looked bloody ridiculous. Even by Hollywood standards,
this was outrageously embarrassing attention-seeking made worse by the fact that two of his young children were next to him,” ranted The Sun columnist Piers Morgan.

Exactly how a father taking his kids to a game could be deemed ridiculous escapes me.
The undeniably talented musician is also a controversial figure who briefly flirted with politics and has mental health issues. Kanye also has a penchant for abusing social media to attack his ex-wife, an indication that he has not moved on.

However, his public heckling in front of his kids went beyond the pale. While thousands of people go through divorce every day, their dirty linen is seldom hung out to dry. However,
your woes will be serialized if you are a public figure. Chin up, Minnie.
