It’s been confirmed that the former minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson died on Monday.
The mother of two boys, who also served as fisheries minister, was 59 years old.

The former agriculture and energy minister was at the time of her death caught up in accusations that she had tried to solicit a bribe from suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s husband. It’s alleged that the bribe was to make the inquiry into Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office go away.
It’s been reported that Mkhwebane’s husband, David Skosana, has opened a case of extortion against her and others fingered including, Qubudile Dyanti and Pemmy Majodina.
She came under fire in 2015 for the illegal sale of 10 million barrels of strategic oil reserves.
She was a Cabinet minister under former president Jacob Zuma and when the cabinet was reshuffled in 2017 she lost her position.
Thuli Madonsela, former public protector, was of the first few people to offer condolences. She said: “OMG. This is shocking! Heartfelt condolences to her children whom Tina Joemat-Pettersson loved dearly, her family, friends and colleagues. May her sweet soul #RIP.”
The Presidency has also offeredits condolences. In a statement on Tuesday, it said: “We have lost a remarkable leader who dedicated herself to improving the quality of life in her home province of the Northern Cape in the early years of our democracy before assuming national responsibilities in key portfolios.
“We will miss the passion and vigour with which Tina Joemat-Pettersson fought for a better South Africa from the rural villages of the Northern Cape to the benches of Parliament and international platforms. May her soul rest in peace.”
