Pearl Maseko-Binqose congratulates Lwazi Mthabela on Ukhozi FM appointment

Pearl Maseko-Binqose, the former Ukhozi FM programmes manager, has congratulated Lwazi Mthabela on his recent appointment as the station’s business manager.

Maseko’s gesture coincides with her own career transition after she abruptly left the SABC’s main radio station in October 2024.

The appointment of Mthabela ushers in a new era for Ukhozi FM, the country’s biggest radio station, renowned for its lively programming and cultural impact.

Mthabela brings a wealth of media and communications experience to the position that was left vacant by Sbongi Ngcobo, who resigned in November 2024.

Maseko-Binqose, who collaborated closely with the station’s management while she was employed there, commended Mthabela’s vision.

Perfect fit to lead Ukhozi FM

“Lwazi’s passion and strategic mindset make him the perfect fit to lead Ukhozi FM’s business operations. I wish him strength and success,” Maseko-Binqose said in a statement posted on her Facebook page.

“Warmest congratulations to my dear friend, Mr Lwazi P Mthabela, formerly the marketing manager and now officially the business manager of Ukhozi FM.

“To witness this moment is deeply moving. It is not merely a professional elevation; it is a divine appointment. Who would have imagined?”

Maseko-Binqose continued: “For those of us who truly know your journey, we understand that this was no accident; this was God-ordained.

“You’ve been thoroughly tested in every sense of the word, but you held steadfast to hope, refusing to surrender to despair.

“And now, having emerged from the crucible of adversity, you stand triumphant. Yours is not merely a victory but a testament to resilience, a hard-won triumph rich with the sweetness that only those who have truly struggled can understand.

“You did not simply survive; you overcame … and in overcoming, you have become stronger, wiser, and unshakably victorious.”

Mthabela’s ascent coincides with a period of change for Ukhozi FM, which has recently seen the departure of important personalities like Maseko-Binqose and host Mandla “Njinji” Magwaza.

It is anticipated that under his direction, the station will stabilise and solidify its position as the industry leader.
Contentious exit from the station
Maseko-Binqose’s congratulatory message is bittersweet, though, considering her own contentious departure from Ukhozi FM.

Maseko, who was appointed in January 2023 following a two-year search for a programmes manager, resigned due to disagreements with a colleague.

According to sources, the colleague’s public criticism and meddling in Maseko-Binqose’s work caused a toxic work environment, which in turn led to the conflict.

According to reports, the SABC stepped in and moved the colleague to its Auckland Park office in Johannesburg in order to ease tensions.

Although Maseko-Binqose resigned, according to the official narrative, some media reports indicate that she was under pressure to leave.

She now works as a spokesperson and media liaison officer for the provincial department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs, drawing on her vast background from her work as an audio-visual communication specialist in parliament as well as her work at Ukhozi FM and Gagasi FM.

Mthabela’s career highlights

According to SABC management, Mthabela has managed accounts and created marketing strategies while working with well-known advertising agencies.

His positions as public sector account manager at Gagasi FM, account manager at SAB, and account manager at Avusa Media are among his career highlights.

Later, he was hired by the same station as a commercial lead and key account manager, where he developed his skills in driving business growth and managing important accounts in the radio sector.

“Mr Mthabela’s educational background also provides a solid foundation for this role. He holds a B-Tech degree in Management from Durban University of Technology, as well as a Certificate in Management Development from the same university.

“He is currently enrolled in a postgraduate diploma in project management at the University of Stellenbosch,” said Mmoni Ngubane, the SABC’s head of communications.
