Eastern Cape provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene has condemned the gruesome attack and killing of elderly people.
This after the murders of two pensioners in Cata location outside Keiskammahoek at the weekend.
The couple, aged 73 and 83, was allegedly assaulted to death by a 28-year-old relative at their homestead on Saturday evening.
According to Mene, police were summoned to the crime scene and quickly began with the initial investigation.
“Police discovered that the elderly citizens were assaulted with an axe. The suspect was arrested by the community members and the dangerous weapon he allegedly used was confiscated by the police,” Mene said.
He added that a case of murder has been opened for investigation.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Keiskammahoek magistrate’s court to answer to charges of murder.
Last week, another murder case of an old couple from Limpopo was reported to the police.
Limpopo provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said police were alerted about the incident and upon arrival at the scene, they found the couple lying in a pool of blood inside their bedroom.
They had sustained several deep cut wounds.
Meanwhile, police in Bloemfontein in Free State have launched an investigation after three bodies were found tied and strangled at a house in the CBD’s Van Heerden Street.
Police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle identified the bodies as those of two women and a man.
“The police were summoned to a crime scene where three bodies belonging to two women and a man were found on Thursday morning,” said Earle.
“The bodies have been identified, they belong to Christo Theron, Janine Theron and Betsie Kruger.”
