Police emerge victorious after gun battle with criminals

The police in KwaZulu-Natal have managed to break the back of a syndicate behind a series of deadly shootings and drug-related crimes in Durban.

This after the killing of five people and an arrest of a suspect at the weekend.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, spokesperson for police in KwaZulu-Natal, the anti-gang unit launched a manhunt for suspects linked to a murder case where three people including a child were shot and killed in Springsfield on March 21.

“They spotted a vehicle in Morningside fitting the description of the vehicle used in the commissioning of the crime,” Mathe said.

“That is where five other suspected drug dealers were shot and killed during a shootout with the police’s anti-gang unit.

“Five firearms including three rifles and two pistols, money and drugs worth an undisclosed amount of money have been seized by police.”

Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, said the shootout should send a stern warning to criminals.

“Well done to all involved, we have been having a challenge of shootings and drug-related crimes in KwaZulu-Natal,” Cele said.

“These suspects are believed to be part of a syndicate operating in Durban and surrounding areas. Good work to the team, but there is more that still needs to be done.

“We are definitely coming for more of them [criminals].”

A suspect who was arrested faces charges of possession of drugs, illegal possession of firearms and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
