Police probe horrific death of Limpopo couple inside a shack

Driekop police in Sekhukhune district have cast a net wide for unknown suspects who murdered a Limpopo couple.

The police are also pleading with members of the public to help bring the suspects to book by sharing leads about the perpetrators’ whereabouts.

The dead couple, aged 36 and 38, respectively were discovered in Ga-Maroga village on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said: “Police received a report on 31 August 2023 about the dead bodies of a couple which were discovered in a shack.

“Upon arrival at the scene, police found the bodies of a man and woman aged 38 and 36 years with bullet wounds on their bodies.

“They were laying on the bed covered with blankets. The motive for this gruesome killing is unknown.”

Ledwaba said the circumstances surrounding the couple’s murder is being investigated.

“The deceased’s identity will be released soon after their next of kin have been notified,” according to Ledwaba.

Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe, provincial police commissioner, condemned the killing and called on the community to help police nab the suspects.

According to quarterly crime statistics released in May by Police Minister Bheki Cele, at least 70 murders are committed in South Africa every day.

The statistics covered the first three months of the year. Cele announced at the time that more than 6 200 people were killed between January and March 2023.

According to the statistics, the figure translates to a 3.4% increase compared with the same period in 2022, when 6 083 people had their lives snuffed out.

However, the figure was lower compared to the last three months of 2022.

The overwhelming majority of the victims were adult men, with 969 women and 245 children murdered.

The murders of women showed an increase of 71 compared with the same period in 2022, while there was a decrease of 19.6% child murders.
